Despacito is a hit song from Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi together with Daddy Yankee was released in 2017. The song became the number one music streamed at the period within six months. The track is a mixture of reggaeton and pop did not only bring attention to reggaeton music but it was also an attraction to Latin music more generally. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs which were Spanish most of the time, and four more in 2016. In the height of Despacito's success in 2017, 19 songs that were mainly in Spanish made it to within the top 100. This number rose to 41 by 2020. When Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, many popular musicians began to join forces with reggaeton musicians. Drake and Bad Bunny worked together for the track MIA MIA (2018) as did Madonna and Maluma on Medellin, Madonna and Maluma worked together on Medellin in the year 2019. In 2020, several Reggaeton stars were dissatisfied with its direction toward the mainstream. In contrast, a young generation Rauw Alejandro was determined to maintain the development. He often used elements of electronic dance music in addition to other styles.
